The Joker's Retirement

I was going through my RSS feeds earlier and ran across this little bit of news on wired.com relating to the future of The Joker in live-action Batman films. It seems that at The Ultimate Joker web page there is a petition to make Heath Ledger's portrayal the final version in the live-action movies. It is difficult to argue that Ledger has been the greatest Joker so far and that he will be difficult to top, if not impossible. But I also don't think that it is fair to make his the end all be all of the biggest, most popular, and most devious Batman villian. To have The Joker just disappear and fall off the face of the earth never to be heard from again after The Dark Knight is not the right thing to do. Some fans will be upset that they continued a story involving The Joker at all but I for one would almost be more upset if that put an end to him when he is locked up in Arkham Asylum not causing mayhem. There have been so many greats to play The Joker from Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson to Mark Hammil in several animated versions. Why should it stop there and deny any future actors from taking up the purple suit and green hair? Do you agree or not? Feel free to chime in.
